No More Cheese Rolling

300 cheese rolling fans ignored a police ban on an annual cheese rolling contest, after it was banned becuase of health and safety concerns …

Followers of the cheese rolling challenge held their own unofficial contest and about 300 cheese rollers turned up for the roll.

One of the participating cheese rollers, Nima Nasseri from Sheffield, said it was “painful”. He also added: “I’m a doctor but luckily I didn’t need to treat anyone.”

Inspector Stephen Norris, of Gloucestershire Police Force, said: “The organisers of the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Committee, have an obligation to ensure the safety of those attending”, and that there would be no dedicated medical support if anyone is hurt and this may mean that the safer version of the cheese rolling contest scheduled for next year may be cancelled.

The cheese rolling contest has taken place for over 200 years at Cooper’s Hill near Brockworth, Gloucester, UK, with people chasing a large 7lb block of Double Gloucester cheese down the steep hill. In 2009, about 15,000 people came to the Cooper’s Hill event in Gloucestershire.

The six-time champion Chris Anderson won another two of the five races still held this year, continuing his winning streak. He said: “It’s just tradition and for me it’s hard to stay away. I still totally support the organisers in their bid to bring it back next year.”

The traditional cheese rolling event was called off after 18 people were injured including 10 of the spectators. This is nothing like 1997 where around thirty-three people were injured.

The organisers of the official event have refused to say if it will be held next year.
